Zaid Al-Ars
Zaid Al-Ars is an assistant professor at the Computer Engineering Lab of the Delft University of Technology, where he performs research to analyze and develop multicore computing systems to accelerate genomics and other big data applications. He is a cofounder of Bluebee, a startup that commercializes these big data technologies.

and exciting innovative research idea.
DNA analysis can play a vital role in the diagnosis of cancer and other genetic disease. However, the complexity of such DNA analysis has so far made it impractical to use for personalized medicine applications. Analysis algorithms currently executed on large computer clusters with specialized software are both expensive and time consuming to carry out for patients on a regular basis. Zaid Al-Ars is designing new computer hardware and algorithms to increase the speed of this analysis, making it possible to rapidly perform detailed diagnosis of genetic diseases such as cancer.
The DIG-it! Award is an award for the TU Delft’s most creative, crazy and exciting innovative research idea. The award is part of the DIG-it! process through which innovative ideas that live within the University are found, grinded and polished so the ideas can grow into innovations. With this award the TU Delft wants to reward, encourage and empower its researchers to work on their innovative ideas. The award ceremony is part of the first TU Delft Research exhibition.
