Meet
our region's innovators, entrepreneurs and researchers during an
eclectic meetup that has one single purpose: find the partner and
programme that’s going to help you innovate successfully in our Delta
region. Technological and social changes present us with new challenges.
Strong alliances are essential to creating new solutions. More than
ever, the crossover between industries offers us the services and
products we're looking for. You can meet your alliance at the Border
Sessions Meetup.
The Border Sessions Meetup is organised in collaboration with
Medical Delta, InnovationQuarter, The Hague Security Delta, City of The
Hague and Zuidvleugel.
Spin Your Cells in Space
Blood vessel
formation is of crucial importance in tissue engineering for the
successful reperfusion of complex organs. The cells that line our blood
vessels are very sensitive to mechanical forces. We investigated whether
blood vessel formation is improved when the cells are pre-conditioned
under altered gravity. Cells were exposed to 3 and 10 times the Earth’s
gravity (g) forces in a unique large diameter centrifuge at the European
Space Agency, and then allowed to form blood vessels in a 3D Matrigel.
Technologies promoting enhanced blood vessel formation have important
applications in regenerative medicine. Kim van der Heiden's study can contribute to the
development of new therapies using pre-conditioned cells.
Blood in the Spotlight
The Forensic Biophysics group combines physics, biology, chemistry and forensic sciences to develop new methods for localisation, visualisation and analysis of trauma and biological traces. They have utilized spectroscopy to develop a method for age determination of bruises to aid in the diagnosis of child abuse. Spectroscopy measures how much of each colour from visible light is absorbed by the tissue, allowing determination of the chemical composition of the (bruised) tissue and biological traces. Bruise dating is proven for bruises located on arms. Closely related to this application is age determination of blood stains at crime scenes. The group showed that the chemical composition can be determined using a special spectroscopy-based camera, from which the time of deposition could be calculated. This research resulted in worlds' first forensic spectral camera specifically for crime scene use.
Q42
Kars Veling is founder and CTO of Q42. Q42 is a strategic technological internet agency with a strong focus on innovation culture. Based in The Hague, Amsterdam and Mountainview Q42 employs 55+ engineers. How to mix this new style tech innovation culture with companies like Philips, Rijksmuseum and Staatsloterij? How do startup-style nerds, ventures and large enterprises mix? Kars will give insights on what they've learned, what failed and what worked out well in that respect and how Q42 internally keeps innovation twists alive.

A provocative workshop around wearable strategy and design. We start off with an unfiltered deepdive into the wearable and smartwatch landscape and trends. Then, with you, we’ll blend business model exploration and wearable user experience into complete concepts. The result is a concrete outcome: if and how wearables fit with your organisation’s services or products.
