alternative futures can we choose from and how to get past the perils
of solutionism?
Technological progress and economic change are heavily intertwined. But the public and political debate does not always reflect so. While there is an increasingly urgent debate on what sort of economy would serve us best, this debate seems severed from the debate on utopian future scenarios submitted to us by the heralds of technological progress.
Expectations of the problem solving capacity of technology are high and understandably so. The infrastructure Silicon Valley has developed provides us with tools that will enable us to make tremendous progress in terms of efficiency. But do these solutions mediate challenges being prompted outside the technological domain? Do all problems need to be addressed from an efficiency perspective? Are we not just moving problems from the political realm to the technological realm, creating all kinds of collateral damage? How should we reframe our aspirations to make the most of what technology has to offer?
