Frans Brom (moderator)
Frans Brom is Head of Technology Assessment (Rathenau Instituut) and Professor in the Ethics of Technology Assessment (Utrecht University). Frans is chair of the Wageningen University committee on scientific integrity, chair of the Subcommittee on Ethics and Societal Aspects of the Netherlands Commission on Genetic Modification and Chair of the Global Research Ethics Advisory Group of Unilever. He holds a PhD in ethics.
His research focuses on the impact of science, technology and innovation and on the interaction between ethics and political theory, with a special interest in public morality and the role of trust in pluralistic democratic societies.

Synthetic biology represents a new phase in the development of biotechnology, in which scientists are gaining increasingly more control over the fundamental building blocks of life. By developing standardized interchangeable biological parts, biology is slowly becoming easier to engineer, thus opening up the door for non-experts to engage with the field as well. At the same time we are witnessing the emergence of numerous online platforms, where knowledge is shared by people all over the globe. In this session, three speakers will discuss the potential of online platforms, as well as the do-it-yourself community for the field of synthetic biology.
