Implantable hearing aids: engineering, ethics and prospects for the future
Where
deaf children might once have spent their entire lives in institutions,
with the help of implantable hearing aids it is now possible to let
deaf children hear again. Although this creates new possibilities, it
has also created more pressure to implant hearing aids at increasingly
younger ages and in children with lesser hearing loss. At Border
Sessions Hoetink will discuss the effects of hearing loss, the technical
possibilities for rehabilitation and ethical dilemmas, as well as
sketching several prospects for the future.
